Different codes on the gift card
The gift card, whether on the PDF of the e-card or on the plastic piece of the physical card, contains different codes that each have their own purpose.
1. Definition of the different codes
Gift card code (spending code) : This is what allows the gift card to exist. It allows the card to be spent within a store. This code can be used by your customer service to identify a gift card.
Barcode : This is the barcode version of the gift card code, to make it easier to read at checkout.
Pin code : This is an additional code, attached to the gift card code, to secure the purchase. It must be given at the time of redemption if it is present on the card.
Gift card number (or gift card ID) : This is the unique identifier of the card given by BuyBox, in order to create a beneficiary collection (for wallet, etc). It simply allows BuyBox to enter the gift card in its system and to enrich the gift card with new features (personalized image, personalized message, beneficiary, wallet, etc.). This identifier can be used by your customer service to identify an electronic gift card.
ID code (physical card) : This is the unique ID code provided by the processor, It can be printed on the physical card or not. This code can be used by your customer service to identify a physical gift card.
2. Which codes are displayed on which card
Why are pin codes optional or required on the e-gift card?
If you use BuyBox as a processor, the pin codes on the e-gift card are not required.
On the other hand, if you use another processor, some make the pin code required in order to secure the purchase.
Why are pin codes required on the physical gift card?
Whether it is via the BuyBox processor or via another processor, pin codes on physical gift cards are mandatory. More sensitive to fraud or theft, the pin code allows (as for a bank card) to secure them.
PWhy on the physical gift card, is there a delay between the creation of the gift card code (spending code) and the creation of the gift card number (gift card ID)?
When the physical gift card is printed, the gift card code is created and immediately integrated.
The gift card number will be created only when the customer has purchased the card and validated the payment, since it is at the moment of the purchase that the card will be registered on the BuyBox backoffice.
Very often, it can take a few days between the printing and manufacturing of the physical gift card (creation of the gift card code) and the purchase of the card (creation of the gift card number).
